The Regio 90 was a project implemented by Premier Trains to replace life expired stock.
It's is a flexible system that allows interchange of various rolling stock units.
It has the following components:
Regio 90 Carriages
Regio 90 DMU
Regio 90 DVT
Go 90 Carriages
All units are interchangeable.
The coaching stock can be added into the middle of the DMU units, either 1 Regio 90 carriage or two Go 90.
Up to 3 DMUs can be coupled together. Coupled to form 4,5,6,7+ 8 car units
DMUs can be also be used as a driving unit for loco hauled stock when a DVT isn't available.
Implementation:
The system has proved successful however it's introduction has been restricted for the following reasons:
Costs of new units
Availability of existing trains deemed to be of an 'acceptable' standard.
Reluctance to move from Loco Hauled Stock to multiple units (only applies to DMU).
Criticism:
Some passengers have complained that the new units offer lower levels of comfort to the units they replaced. This is due mostly to a more spartan interior and harder seating.
Where DMU's have replaced loco hauled coaches there has been a drop in the number of seats available
Future
Whilst the project has proved popular and successful only life expired trains have been replaced.
Though PT have a 'vision' to overhaul and modernise their fleet- the size of the company and range of rolling stock are prohibitive.
At present the capital is not available to extend the project further and order more trains.
Instead PT and overhauling existing stock and acquiring replacement stock second hand.
It is therefore unknown whether PT will ever re-commence the project
